I wrote "Songs Across America" because at some point a project needs to say out loud what it thinks it is doing. This one is the title song, and it took me a while to work out what it needed to be. It could have been a list of places, and there is some of that in it, from Mississippi blues to Santa Fe to steel guitars in Austin and jazz under the French Quarter sky. But a list is not an argument. What I wanted was the reason those places belong in the same song at all, which is that none of them sound alike and all of them are the same country. That is not a contradiction I want to resolve. It is the entire point.
The story behind the song is the third verse, where the journey stops being scenic. You can drive to the haunted fields of Gettysburg and you can sail Puget Sound on the same trip, and both of them are beautiful, and only one of them is beautiful in a way that lets you off easy. I needed the song to hold that. The songs of those who came before us still dance on the breeze whether or not those songs were happy ones, and a project that only maps the pretty parts of this country would be a postcard rather than a portrait. What I hoped to reach in that verse is that in every place and in every face a deeper truth is found. Not a nicer one. A deeper one.
Everything I believe about this catalog is compressed into the bridge, so if somebody only ever hears eight lines of my work I would want them to be those. The harmony of strangers, under a wide and silver moon. That is what I am after. Not agreement, because agreement is not what harmony means. Harmony means different notes, sung at the same time, on purpose, by people who did not arrive together. This country is very good at that when it remembers to try. So the outro is an invitation rather than a conclusion, because the project is not mine to close. Come find your special story along this ever-winding way. I hope people take that literally. Every town is a chapter, and the ones still unwritten are the reason to keep driving.
