I wrote "The Turning of the Page Draws Near" because New Year's Eve is not really about the new year. It is about the room. Somewhere around eleven o'clock, when the children are running past their bedtime and the streamers are already coming down and everyone in the kitchen is singing out of tune and out of time, you look around and understand that this, right here, is the thing. Not the countdown. Not the resolutions nobody keeps. Just these particular people in this particular room, and the fact that they came again this year the way they came last year.
The story behind the song is in the bridge, and it is the reason the grandfather clock is in the hallway rather than anywhere else. Everybody in that house can hear it. Time moves by too damn fast, and I left that line rough on purpose because it is the one thought at the party that nobody says out loud. So they decide to ignore the clock. They cannot stop it and they know they cannot stop it, and they keep singing the same old song anyway. That is not denial. That is the only rebellion available to us, and I think it is a good one. The fourth verse admits what the evening is actually holding underneath the noise, unrealized dreams slipping through our fingers and the sting of things we did wrong, and then it turns and says the circle is what carries us. Both things are true at the same time. That is what makes it worth a song.
Songs Across America spends most of its time out on the roads and rivers and mountains, but some of the most American places I know are ordinary kitchens on the last night of December. I wanted one song that stayed indoors, where the country actually lives. I hope people play this one at their own gatherings, with their own out-of-tune singing going on around it. What I want them to take from it is what the chorus is quietly claiming, that raising a glass to the love that brought everyone into the room is the way you make a moment last forever. The page turns whether we are ready or not. The people in the circle are the only part we get to keep.
