"I Need The Light"
I wrote "I Need the Light" for the part of us that keeps asking questions long after we were supposed to have the answers. There is a particular kind of loneliness in wanting to understand something and not being able to get there on your own. It does not matter whether you are a student at midnight, someone trying to make sense of a hard year, or a person simply looking for a way through. The mind reaches out in every direction and comes back with more questions than it left with. I wanted a song that stayed inside that reaching instead of rushing past it toward a tidy conclusion.
The story behind the song is really about who the light is. I left that deliberately open. It might be a teacher, someone long gone whose thinking still shapes yours. It might be the accumulated work of everyone who came before you and left their marks on the path. It might be something closer to faith. What mattered to me was the posture of the seeker rather than the identity of the source, because the humility in the line about being a humble seeker is the whole point. The narrator never claims to have arrived. He only claims to be growing, and to be no longer lost, which is a much smaller and much more honest thing to say.
I built the imagery out of landscape on purpose. Valleys deep with mystery, mountains carved by time, ancient stars that still guide us home. Songs Across America has always treated the physical world as something more than scenery, and this song asks the land to do the same work for an inward journey that it does for an outward one. Finding your way through what you do not understand is not so different from finding your way through country you have never walked. I hope anyone listening who is in the middle of their own searching hears permission in it. Not the promise that understanding arrives on schedule, but the quieter reassurance that knowledge does bloom in barren places, that small insights do grow into wisdom, and that the dawn is worth continuing to walk toward even while it is still dark.
