I wrote "Esperanza's Promise" because I wanted to know what courage actually looks like when it has no weapon in its hand. It is easy to write a song about bravery when bravery gets to fight back. This one does not. The crew on that small ship has exactly one tactic available to them, which is to put their own bodies where the harpoon is going, and that is the whole plan. There is nothing clever about it. They slide the boat between the whale and the bow and then they simply stay there. I kept coming back to that image because it strips courage down to its bones. No leverage, no advantage, no way to win by force. Just a decision to stand still in front of something that is not going to stop on its own.
The story behind the song is the bridge, and specifically the fact that both sides of it are true. Some say we're heroes, some say we're fools. I did not want to settle that argument, because the crew cannot settle it either, and pretending otherwise would have made the whole song dishonest. They do not know how history will read them. What they know is that they are out there in that moment, between right and might, and the only thing they can control is which one they embody. What I hope listeners take from it is the fourth verse, the one that skips ahead to the end of a life and asks what will be worth telling. Those days when we chose to stay. That is the question the song is really asking, and it does not only apply at sea.
