I wrote "Yosemite Calls" as the biggest, most unabashed song I could build, because Yosemite is one of the few places on earth that can absorb that much scale without being overstated. There is a kind of songwriter instinct that says to underplay a subject, to find the small quiet detail and let it stand in for the whole. That instinct is usually right, and it is exactly wrong for this valley. When you are standing at the base of El Capitan looking three thousand feet straight up, a small quiet detail is a lie. So I let this one have the full choir, the full orchestra, the wordless voices rising before the first line, because the honest response to that place is not a whisper. It is awe with the volume all the way up.
The story behind the song is why I kept reaching for the language of cathedrals. El Capitan standing guard over the cathedral's stairs, nature's cathedral calling, grace prevailing through its halls. I did not choose that vocabulary to make the song sound religious. I chose it because a cathedral is the only human thing we have ever built that was designed to do what Yosemite does without trying, which is to make a person walk in feeling ordinary and walk out feeling rearranged. John Muir understood this about the place more than a century ago, and I wanted a song that stood inside that same understanding, where the valley is not scenery you look at but a space that does something to your sense of your own size.
The bridge is the human center of it, and it is deliberately the quietest moment in a very loud song. In this sacred space we lie, where waters meet the sky, feel your soul catch fire as you embrace a new desire. That is the turn the whole thing is built to reach. All the granite and the waterfalls and the choir are setting up one small human event, which is a person standing in a place so large that something inside them finally shifts. Songs Across America keeps insisting that the land itself is worth the biggest songs we can write, not just the people passing through it, and this is that conviction at full volume. I hope people play this one loud. What I want them to take from it is the last line, that Yosemite's beauty was built by nature's own hands, and that we are lucky beyond reckoning to be small in front of it.
